Why is diversity, equity and inclusion training needed?

When we leave our homes we enter a world that is diverse beyond our wildest imaginations. Even though we might work with others who look similar to us and who might live in the same neighborhood as us, our realities can look very different.

Your coworker who lives down the street might seem to have a life that is quite similar to yours, but what you don’t know is that they have two moms and a disabled brother. Therefore, those “harmless” gay jokes that you make, and those times when you call someone retarded, are painful for your coworker to hear.

It’s not your responsibility to know the details of the lives of those around you, but it is your responsibility to be mindful of the things you are saying because you don’t know what the people around you have gone through or are going through now.

Simply bringing awareness to those who don’t realize that their words can have meanings they didn’t intend can make meaningful changes to how they are perceived. Everyone can start to think more inclusively, one step at a time.

How do we design our training?

Each training is designed specifically for the business that we are working with. Before the training, we get a basic breakdown of the diversity within the company and its clients. An anonymous pre-survey is sent to the employees to get an overall feel of their experiences with discrimination in all forms whether in the workplace, with clients, or in their personal lives. The training is then developed based on these results.

With open minds and gentle hearts, we begin by discussing privilege, unconscious bias, and people-first language. We will share experiences and provide an opportunity to learn more about your coworkers and the struggles that they might face.

Our techniques leave shame and offensive feelings at the door to ensure that we will all be enlightened after the workshop.

Being human means that we each have unconscious biases that are at work in our personalities, no matter how privileged our upbringing may have been. Peeling back the layers of our own biases is not only possible but it is a wonderful way to induce growth amongst ourselves.

What is our goal with this training?

Our goal is to open the discussion about our differences in a way that is gentle, understanding, and respectful. We aim for everyone to leave with a better understanding of what life can be like for people around you, neighbors, friends, and strangers. In this way, we are giving you the tools to ensure that the places you spend time are safe for all.

We hope that after our training, you are able to assess and understand different privileges or biases in a way that will foster growth and help you to become even more inclusive than you were before.
